“I’ve always been much more of a photography person than an art person. Most of what I have on my walls is photography. I just like the representational aspect of it, and the way light happens in good photography. So I was prepared to appreciate Celeste’s artwork, but not to especially want any of it for myself.

I was in for a surprise! Celeste has a way of capturing detail that appeals to my desire for photograph-quality representation, and she infuses her paintings with an artistic “something else” that I can only call spiritual.

The quality of light in her work is transcendant, and at the same time seems natural. The colours she uses are, again, true to nature, and yet have a deeper resonance to the eye.

Her pieces are beautiful, and also offer a sense of continued exploration, something new to see every time I look, a feeling that I’m being taken on a journey.”

How I Work as an Artist

My art is born during the process of allowing a dynamic relationship to form between me and the essence of a subject. Rather than preconceived images, these explorations in search of meaning often hold surprising discoveries, and take on a life of their own.

There is a point, early on in the process, of letting go any notion of myself creating anything totally original, out of thin air. Then my job becomes to give the work whatever it wants or needs.

It feels as though I am in partnership, or a midwife helping birth a new piece, but also discovering new facets of myself. Afterwards I frequently rename it, when I’ve seen, to my surprise, what has hatched.

Viewers are welcome and needed to come into companionship with them, so the art works may come alive. The viewer’s own unique insight and awakened spirit may also be found waiting to be discovered.

When asked how long it takes to finish a painting, I have to answer: “All my lifetime.”

Our creations are the result of all the events in our life that went into making us us. What we are is what we do.

“In the beginnerâ’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” Shunryu Suzuki
