How the course works:

“Journey to Develop the Artist Within – Level 2: Telecourse.

6 Class meetings with no more than 8 participants:

Journey 2 will not be offered in the near future, but might resume later in 2010.

9:30 AM – 11:30 AM Pacific Time

Journey to Discover the Creator Within – Level 1 is a prerequisite for this second level.

We meet on the phone all 6 times.

Class sessions are a combination of teaching, hands-on activities, and guided internal processing through questions and observations.
A teleconference is easy, and the group energy is surprisingly effective. You just need a phone, with a headset so you can work with your hands free. The calls will be to a regular long-distance number in the US.

You will need some very inexpensive materials, like ordinary paper, or newsprint, ready to use coloured pastels, paint, or any media you like. You will need the use of a digital camera to send photos of your work to your buddies and me.

Buddy System:

Creative energy is powerfully enhanced in a small, supportive group. Though you work in the classes from your own home, you won’t be alone. The rest of the class and I will be taking part on the call at the same time.

You will be paired with a buddy after each class to break your isolation and spur on your process. You and your buddy will ‘meet’ by phone between classes, exchange digital photos of your work, and exchange feedback of each others work, and insights from the processing.

What gives me such confidence in you ? My own long road to intrepid art making, by trial and error, convinces me that if I could navigate it alone, I can help to light your path as I have many others.

My Story:

I was always the kid who longed for a pony for every birthday. Of course, I never got one, but I never stopped hoping. When life gave me trouble, I would dig and dig, reasoning that with all this horse manure there was bound to be a pony in here somewhere.

It was not until recently, in my sixth decade, that I started to realize that I’ve actually uncovered many ponies. We all have ponies inside, and the ones we ling for are wild and free. If we compromise and allow our ponies to be tamed, we give away our essential gift, our free spirit. You can ride your pony to freedom without losing your spirit.

I consider myself somewhat of an expert at holding on with my mind at the wheel. I once repeated an image 60 times instead of improvising, so I have loads of empathy for others. Having always been an artist at heart, I have learned by now, how to free myself from the vice-like grip of the illusion of control. I also delight in breaking the rules, and have turned this into an advantage.

After 35 years as a practicing artist, I am convinced, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that everyone who wants to, can participate in unique, meaningful creative expression.
